to remount the steering column to the knuckle do you have to connect the shaft to the knuckle before you mount the column?

I am coming up short with reconnecting the steering column to the knuckle/

Are you referring to the intermediate steering shaft, between the column and steering rack?

If so, it collapses, and extends a few inches. Just have to extend it (pull on it), to get it back on either one.
