I noticed that I must have ripped my outer CV joint boot when I was replacing my rear struts/springs.

Do I have to take the knuckle off to replace the boot?
I just happend and only had about 60 miles with the torn boot.

I'm tempted to fill it with grease and silicone it over until it gets warmer out!

But If I don't have to seperate the knuckle from the axle then I might replace it.
Do I have to pull the whole axle? The hynes manual makes it look like I have to

Grrr....

Any suggestions on patching it?

Thanks,

Jim

I decided to patch the boot with some silicone... I'll put the split boot on
when it gets a little warmer. So.. assuming the silicone holds..

Do you guys think I still have enough grease still in there? I drove about 60 miles (1/2 highway). I heard of folks driving hundreds of miles before noticing the boot being ripped..

My guess is the silicone won't hold.. but it's worth a shot to me!

The boot is to keep dirt, road salt anything else out of the cv joint. I had one tear one week later the bearings were laying on the road because I did not get it fixed quick enough. I would replace it soon if it were mine especially since it is winter.
