to the guys who have painted their cladding

I've been mudding twice since I plasti-dipped mine... no peelage at all, except for where I bottomed out on a rock and it rubbed it off the bottom of my bumper...

I used a bunch on my cladding tho, like 5 coats, and spent a bunch of time sanding and prepping.

Maybe thats where I went wrong on the bike only did 3 coats but prep work was really good.

Has anyone actually done the Plasti-Dip spray coatings?

One local member was going to do his but he disappeared.

Pretty interesting YouTube videos on the subject.

I used dupli color spray on truck bed liner and it chips off. I heard plasti-dip is the way to go. My buddy has it done to his F250 and it looks good. I want to re-do mine in plasti-dip.

I sanded and painted a year and a half ago and haven't had to redo it at all. I did scrape some off on the front bumper cover sliding it up a rock face but I just hit it a little with the rattle can and it went back to looking great.

How many cans did you use total? I just bought a can the other day after looking at all the stuff you can do with plasti dip, just to try out on some areas on the truck. Pretty sure I'm going to do the cladding too

I used 5 and that gave me all but the front bumper, so 7 would be more than enough with a touch up can for dings and stuff...

awesome thanks. I love this stuff

I used 5 cans of krylon fusion with about 6 coats. My prep work was washing everything really well twice with dawn and warm water after powerwashing it. It's still holding up well except where I've scraped rocks and trees on the trail but there is very little wear shown from road driving. Nothing a couple touchups cant fix.

i used 3 coats of rustoleum and it peels but im also rough on my plastics. my truck is a trail rig and if i park it at some car show it looks rough but thats a truck cars got good lines and clean paint buff polish repeat. truck hit a huge mud puddle cake it on thick then park next to polished and buffed beauty.

a truck is not a truck if the beds not scratched up and doesnt have at least 3+ fluids greased up in it. a true truck is scratched dented and worn do to harder work.

so that being said i think im done playing with this idea and plan to get custom bumpers done up

The adheasion promoter is pretty importend to keep the paint sticking. I think I am going to do this the black looks good on black. I second the questions why didn't ford do it like that in the first place?

My question is really how the plasti-dip holds up. We just picked up a ST for my son and he really wants to make the cladding/bumpers black. His ST is not going to see any crazy trails.

I'm thinking that the bed liner put on after adhesion promoter would work pretty well.

Any updates from you plasti-dip guys?

I plasti-dipped mine over summer and none of it has peeled off yet. There is one spot on the bottom of my bumper that rubbed off on a rock when I went offroading but thats it.

Big thing to do is prep the hell out of the cladding. Sand it smooth, make it nice and clean with soap and water then just before painting rub it down with some rubbing alcohol to get it completely clean. I did that and so far no issues! I have yet to do my front bumper, but I am planning on getting that done in the next few weeks.

Thanks. I wonder how often it will need to get re-done and how easy it will be to pull off next time you want to respray it.

The rear bumper is really beat up and I think the plasti-dip could cover up some of the mess. What did you do where the grip pads are on the rear bumper?

I popped the pads off and left them the factory color to give them a little contrast with the rest of the bumper. I have had mine done for 5-6 months now and no wear anywhere at all. It would probably be a bear to get off if you wanted to redo it tho...

When my rear bumper got rubbed bare I keep a can in my truck and just sprayed it and after it dried you cant tell it was ever damaged.

Lots of Plastidip videos on Youtube. Check them out.

I've looked at them. I have a set of Saleen rims on my Cobra that I was going to black out. I actually purchased 4 cans before I chickened out and returned them. Seems like a PITA to take off and reapply. I wonder how it will stand up to the Florida sun.

I was planning on using actual paint for mine, but after a ton of wasted time on youtube I was set on the plasti-dip. I'm just starting off with everything so I like the idea that if I mess up I can just peel off and redo

How durable is something you can just peel off?

It will only peel if you leave an edge to start at... If you paint the parts completely (as I did) it will not just peel off. Like I said, I've been mudding twice, once in an extremely rocky area where I dented my gas tank, since I've plasti-dipped mine. And I have had 1 fist sized area peel from a large rock. On site, I sprayed it with a can I keep in my cab and 3 months later you cannot notice it was ever scrapped up.
