Toe links how can you tell if they are bad

So after replacing my engine in my 2002 ford exploreer the wife notesd the wheels werent holding the road well . She took it down to monroe muffler

yea well they say it need $4000 yup thats right $4000 worth of suspension and brake work (help me I have fallen and cant get back up from laughing )

so anyway they say the toe links are bad. I jacked the car up tonight and looked at them - they are solid with no freeplay. How can I tell if indeed they are worn??

First, get a list of the parts they tell you are bad. Then get a second opinion. Then...if the parts are deemed bad, get the needed parts from Rock Auto. They will likely be about half of the brick & mortar stores. I would look for a guy who does work, on his own. They will be a good bit cheaper. $100/hr is NOT how much money I make!!!

I just mentioned this the other day in here. Avoid Nationally franchised auto repair shops like 'Monroe, Midas, Firestone just for this reason, a ridiculous $4000 repair quote for brakes and suspension. These types of places love people or suckers they can take advantage of. There are tons of horror stories(I've got a few from my younger days, on all 3 places) out there about these national franchise types of shops. If the boots are okay on the toe links(ball joints etc) and there is no loose play in them, they are probably okay, but you should take the vehicle elsewhere, a place you can trust like a smaller, locally, privately owned shop that has a computerized wheel alignment machine, and get a wheel alignment inspection done. Just tell them there is a little loose play in the steering and you think you may need an alignment. Don't tell them what Monroe said to you. Let this new place diagnose the steering issue and make them physically show you(walk you back to the truck on the lift and point out the problem part or parts) what is wrong with the steering. If they come back with something reasonable on price, then go from there. Good luck.

toe links are on the rear, when you are driving it feels like the back end is loose, for no reason at all will feel like rear of vehicle is swerving mine did it most when slowing down (without brakes) or when going down highway where you are not accelerating. if you jack up the rear the back tire will wobble side to side not up and down wont feel like much but if you have someone move your tire and you watch underneath where they attach to the wheel/hub you can see it move can get parts for it from rock auto for less than 150
