Well its a 98 explorer, 4.0 SOHC, Automatic. Its real bad at an idle, not really noticable when you step on the gas at all.. Changed oil, helped a little, strated useing premium, The chatter actually went away for a week, then came back, or maybe i jsut didnt notice it, but its loud.. Any ideas how to solve this problem? Im gonna use some type of oil aditive to see if that works.. Any ideas?

if it is your valves making noise only at idle it could be a weak oil pump. at idle thats the only thing i can think of.

Is your motor up to date with the recalls? The front timing cam guides go bad and it makes a rattle/clatter sound. Had mine done a couple of months ago only to have the rear go bad 2 weeks after I had the front done. Which isn't under recall I am going to get that fixed soon. Go to a harbor freight and buy a 5 dollar stethoscope and see if you can pinpoint the noise at idle. Thats what I did

Yeah the ford dealer refused to preform any recalls on my vehical. The f&*kers. They are the biggest scumbags over there (wilberham mass ford dealer). I had to buy the recall kit for the upper intake seals, it came with the timeing tesioner but i never put it in when i did the gaskets.. hmm wonder if can find that somewhere
