I got some parts for my Dad's Explorer at a local junkyard today. These trips are always fun, because you can dig around in junked Explorers and get options you never had (if they are in good shape). My 91 has no cupholders on the 5-speed boot, however the 93 - 00 Ranger's do, so I am looking for that.

Today's trip was to get some parts for a headlight, the truck I got it off of was a totaled 98 XLT with the V8 engine. I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but has anyone done an engine swap on a 91 5 speed?

Could the 5.0 fit in the 91's bay (I have heard of this being done in 4 door Explorers and Rangers, but will it fit in a 91 two door? And if it does, would the 5 speed work with it? I'm thinking the 5.0 would be too much for my 91's gears, 4X4 system, electronics, etc...but a man can dream. :)

The 5.0L will fit in your Eexolprer. The current drivetrain will hold up, minus the transmission. I don't think it would be up to the torque of the V8. But on the bright side you could use a Mustang bellhousing and run a T-5 without any problems. Get ahold of an Advanced Adaptors catalog for the necessary peices to do the swap. You will need the computer and wiring harness out of the donor vehicle if you want to keep it legal.
