A chip will remove the speed governor.

what chip? where is it? I looked my computer and there is no chip

tks Mr I will try there again,

85 mph is very ;ow for the speed limiter; mine is at 104.

I was actually thinking that too, but I didn't know enough about the subject to say anything

according to GPS - my 94' will go between 105-110 but probably b/c I have 3.27 gears. It's funny watching the needle go way past the 85 mark and it's very stable with the edelbrocks on.

My moms 5.0 Mounty is around 112-115 for top speed.

Why is there such a big variation in our Explorers. Some people say their 5.0's can only go about 100, mine goes pass that and we have the same gears??

I could understand the ohv V6 being different with all the gear options, but even with 4.10's the ohv V6 will go easily above 85mph...weird.

I have a 94 Sport with 3.27's, Edelbrocks, and stock PCM. I believe the speed governor is set at 104 mph or so. Anyway, I've never had it above about 86 mph, and it doesn't seem to want to go much faster. I don't have any desire to go any faster than 80-85 in my truck. I got a 1980 Corvette for that. :)

I thought most of the 2nd gens were limited at around 106?

thats what I don't get, I read that they we're limited around 106-110, but on gps it showed 112-115 for ours, and my 94' had no prob getting to between 105-110; little slow getting there but......

I could understand the ohv V6 having a little difference in speed with all the different gear options, but I don't know why theres a variation on 5.0's scince they all come with 3.73.

Some came with 3.55's and some later ones came with 4.10's as per a member on this site.

How did 5.0's come with 3.55's? I haven't seen a single one with them, although I have heard that they were available - somehow?

And I remember that thread with the dude saying his or his girlfriends 5.0 had 4.10's, and it ended up being that he was like the only one with them, and like everyone was like how the hell did it come with 4.10's - that was the thread right?

Even then there really wouldn't be a big difference except the 3.55 may be slightly faster and the 4.10 might be slightly slower.

It would be as big as say a ohv V6 with 3.08 gears and a ohv V6 with 4.10 gears.

some were goverened in the 90's, some past 100, even 110 in some cases.

It varied based on what ford thought the top speed should be. There are a number of reasons the speed varies, from warranty claims on stressed parts to rollover and vehicle control issues. If a certain part doesn't hold up to a durability test, sometimes they will put a govern on to help reduce the total number of warranty claims. Call it a band-aid fix :)

wonder why they did that, as my 94' will go between 105-110, but I had a friend who used to have a 92' XLT and it would barely go past 85mph mark, while mine swings way past it.

sometimes it varies between automatics and manuals, sometimes not. I'm sure there's a story behind each vehicle that is governed at a sub-100 speed.

An example of why they might do that, is if they found high failure rates on a particual bearing or componet in the suspension at high RPM's for long periods of time. Another reason would be if they had a problem with driveline critical vibration at high speeds.

Troll had a V8 2nd gen and his truck had 3.55 gears I think...but I'm no 2nd gen expert by any means...

Of course I'm sure you guys know your tires are gonna affect your top end, and what is displayed on your speedo is dependent on tire size and speedo gear.

Update: Got my truck up to 95 mph on GPS yesterday while testing my manifold/fuel injector/plug job. It had more, I was just worried about the state patrol. It takes it about a mile to get from 85 to 95 mph.
