Torque converter wont lock up

Hey Mr. Shorty I was wondering if you can explain the output state test. So I preform the KOEO test and after it is over I push the throttle to cycle through different tests right? how many times would I need to push the throttle before i come across the test of the transmission solenoids?

and I'm a little confused so let me make sure I understand correctly, "IF" the PCM commands the TCC to lock I should then get 0 volts?

I retested the #53 wire on the PCM, the TCC wire. I guess I wasn't touching the wire well enough, this time I got 12.3volts with key on.

I was in auto class at school, we were testing the cooling system. I brought my car in and noticed that my top hose was hot and I only had the truck on for about a few minutes and I think my thermostat is shot :(
I just thought I'd ask at what temperature the thermostat opens. in case I decide to buy a new one.

I'm going to test it again tomorrow, so I should turn on the truck cold and put my hand on the top hose right? and if the hose warms up slowly then I know its a bad stat right? Because its supposed to be cold and all of a sudden get hot because the stat should open and not be completely open all the time.
I know i ask a lot but I want to learn :)

OH I forgot to say, I looked at my shifting and it shifts at 15mph, 25mph 40ishmph and 55mph so I know 4th gear works

Once. After you press the throttle the first time, the transmission solenoids should change state with each successive time you press the throttle.

Assuming you are working with the configuration proposed in post #19, yes. 12 V -> Switch open -> TCC unlocked. 0 V -> Switch closed -> TCC locked (assuming transmission is in 3rd or 4th gear at the time).

Ford's spec for the thermostat is 192-195 F. That is one common way of testing the thermostat.

If I'm counting correctly, that is 4 shifts, which is usually what you see:
15 mph = 1->2 shift
25 mph = 2->3 shift
40 mph = 3->4 shift
55 mph = TCC unlock -> TCC lock.
Are you certain the TCC is not locking?
 






I'm positive. I'm beginning to think that it only worked after I had disconnected the battery. maybe I should try that again.

Anyway I entered into the output state test and when I did the CEL stayed on, and if I pushed the throttle again it turned off. on off on off. when I did it the TCC wire from the PCM read at .50 volts... is that expected?

That sounds right. You are looking for the voltage drop across the switch to go from ~12 V to ~0 V, and, for the purposes of this test, 0.5 V is pretty close to 0. If memory serves, the diagnostic manual will say that anything less than 9 or 10 V is close enough to indicate that the PCM is doing its job.
 






so now I need to drop the pan and see what going on in the transmission? I was afraid that was going to happen. so what should I look for? see if any wires are disconnected anywhere maybe.

I know I still had that KOEO 66 code.
 






I know this is an old post but yesterday I took a pretty long drive. 120 miles one way and later that day back again with some friends.

Anyway I was going up a fairly steep hill and my TCC kicked in! It worked on and off again throughout the trip. sometimes as it should, simply by easing off the gas it would kick in...but other times it just wouldn't I had to keep fussing with the cruise control. Once the TCC was on it would stay on as it should.
What I'm wondering is I had been driving for at least 30 minutes to 45 minutes before it finally decided to kick in. It acts more like it has a mind of its own.
On the way back it was pretty much the same deal. sometimes it would turn on and sometimes not. It likes to work on hills.
I want to know if some adjustment would make it work more reliably?
