Welcome to the forum!

To access the torque converter, you will need to remove the transmission. If you need, I can post the full Ford-approved procedure.

I don't think that is right...

If you pull the transmission and leave the torque converter on the motor you run the risk of pulling that sleeve forward on the front pump and messing up the input shaft.

The way I've always done it on the a4ld (no idea if its the ford way) is to remove the access cover from the bottom of the converter housing. Now you can get to the converter bolts. Just use a bit arse socket/ratchet to rotate the motor so you can get to each bolt.

I just checked my Chiltons and that is how it says to do it too..

How would you extract the torque converter without pulling the trans out of the way? It's sandwiched in between.

Every time I've pulled a trans, I've unbolted the torque converter from the flexplate, then pulled the trans out with the torque converter sitting on the input shaft.

We are on the same page now.. disconnect the converter from the flex plate and then remove the transmission from the engine.

From how I read your post I thought it said to just remove the transmission would would leave the converter connected to the motor which is not good for the transmission.

I was assuming the OP knew that they had to pull the transmission to remove the converter and that they were asking what to do about the converter being bolted to the engine.
