Hi All

My son's girlfriend just picked up an 1996 Explorer 4.0 with electronic
four wheel drive "switch"

I want to change the transmission fluid - after running a search :(
I found results leading to no :fire: torque convertor drain plug ??

Any info regarding changing Fluid will be greatly apprieciated :D

Thanks Curt

No drain plug on the 4R or 5R Torque convertors...

A good way to "flush" the system is by doing the following:
1) drop pan to drain fluid in the pan and the filter
2) disconnecting the line at the output of the auxilary cooler (line going from in front of the radiator back to the pan) and draining this into a container (large enough for the "flush")
3) refill pan w/ clean fluid (engine off)
4) start engine and add fluid at the dipstick tube at the same rate the transmission pump is pumping it out of the line you disconnected (the lines go from the torque converter to the radiator cooler to the auxilary cooler and then back to the pan)
5) reconnect the hose and top off fluid while tranny is at a warm idle in park
6) have a beer, and maybe a couple more

This transmission easily holds a couple extra quarts so you can overfill it and pump out 3 quarts without running the pump dry, stop the engine and refill, then repeat. This allows you to do the fluid change alone. 15 quarts gets about 80% new fluid which is more than enough. If there is a lot of sediment you should do this again in 6-12 months. Make sure you use a microfelt filter and not a metal screen one.
