Solved Torsion Bar 101, Everything you Need to look for!

Prefix for threads that contain problems that have been resolved, and there is an answer within the thread.
Hello Clive. My first piece of advice to you is to find a new garage. Any mechanic that thinks a torsion bar adjuster bolt will damage the body of the truck does not deserve to be in business.

Can you better describe the rattling sound?

torsion bars

jason thank you for your reply . the rattle happens when i hit a bump in the road and it rattles through the
whole body of the truck. the torsion bars were suggested by the garage(?) but it is hard to argue as knowledge is limited by everyone in this country including Fords themselves.:frustrate :banghead:

Hi Clive
As another UK owner. Welcome.

You should be fine just to tighten up the torsion bars a little. Just measure the hight first and keep it even. You're right about the garages though, they haven't got a clue when it comes to explorers. The support from Ford seems very poor considering there are some 4,000 units in the UK. All the best.

Hey anyone, I am getting ready to put my lift on during or after spring break. I went under just to inspect the tortion bars and one of the tightening bolts looks good and straight and the other one look a little bit bent(not that much). The thing is when it snowed about 2 months ago I slid down a icy hill and hit a curve going pretty fast on the side with the slightly bent bolt. I am concerned if I can still tighten my tortion bars or is this a problem. What is up with this bolt. Has anyone had this problem. Also when I make mostly right turns the car kind of feels like it slipping or jolting in mid turn. This could be the tortion bars.My friends dad thought it might be the limited slip needing to be flushed. I flushed both differentials and still hasnt gone away. This is some how all connected and I could use your guys input

Thanks, Matt

nevermind, found out what the problem was

Front Springs

Rather than the TT in the front can a person change the springs for a 2" lift? I have done a lot of reading on the TT and I am still paranoid about premature wear on the front end with too much angle from a TT.

Meast-
Xplorers does not have Springs. Atleast the 2nd generation X's. I don't know about the 1st and current generations.

FordBeast98-
So what was the problem? I'd like to know since I have the same sort of problem.

Has anyone extended their front sway bar mounts. Like extensions for suspension lifts. If you are going to crank them for close to 2" I would think that it would be a limiting factor since it is a suspension lift essentially. Just seems I cant get mine even with the back cranking them all the way and I only have shackles back there. (i did back off on them I didnt want to drive around with them maxed out) I didnt play with torsion bar before this and I dont think that anyone one else did before I bought it. Just thinking of explorer stuff when i should be writing a paper

BTW, just edited the thread so the title is spelled correctly.

Last questions before i go to work....

I have the warrior shackles, adn checked my TBs which are reated "FF" on the sticker in my door. I have a 2WD 98 SOHC. I know I'll get about 1.5" from the shackles in the rear, how much additional height will AALs give me? And I can jack up the TT bigger than 2" b/c its a 2WD, right? My goal is to ride on 32s without trimming, so do I have the green light? I'm mainly concerned about my soft torsion bars, and if I need to get AALs to
boost the rear more. Thanks guys...

i was told if i dropped my x using torsion bars, then hit a bump, id feel like i ran over a cinderblock... can anyone confirm this?

I just dropped mine a couple of hours ago. 2.5" drop in the front (using TT) and 2" drop block in the rear. Test drove it for quite awhile. My feeling was it has the same soft ride when you run over small bumps.

If you run over a cinderblock... it'll feel like it.:D

hmm... the roads in ct are much different than ny... much much worse, which is really my only concern... but maybe ill check it out, thanks...

Know what else I found out on my second day after lowering my X. The ride is very "bouncy". Now I understand why people here buy new shocks when they lower their X.:(
