Another tBar Question...

In previous posts, I stated that I have the 'L rated" bars. On my 97 Limited SOHC.

If you guys have a moment, can you have a look on your trucks and tell me what your suspension codes are on your drivers door >AND< what the cast stamp reads on the FRONT of your Torsion Bar, underneath the truck. Might need to bring a light ;)

THANKS!!!

i have A rated bars 2001 mountaineer 5.0 AWD

these are the stiffest bars...

B rated bars were the stiffest until 1999, then they came out with A rated.

a little off the mark, as my brothers 96 has the spring code 'A F' in his door jamb sticker.

none the less...

Im trying to establish what the sticker on the door jambs say and how they relate to the cast stamp on the actual bars.

My brother hasn't looked on his bars for me, yet... tough to ever get him to do anything for me regardless how simple it is lol!

They guy at ford parts said the 'A' relates to the front and the 'F' relates to the rear leafs.

So Im confused, because my bars say 'U L' and I was unaware of 'U' being a code for the Torsion Bars. And should I assume the the 'L' in my case is relating to the rear leafs? FYI - I have upgraded the leafs already about 2 years ago.

See here:
How to Locate Your Spring Code
Determining your spring code is fairly simple. More than likely the spring code will reside at the bottom-right of the tag where the VIN is (Panel of DRIVER SIDE Door). It will be a 2, 3, or 4 character code.
2 Characters
1st Character – Front Spring
2nd Character – Rear Spring
3 Characters
1st Character – Front Spring
2nd Character – Ignore
3rd Character – Rear Spring
4 Characters
1st Character – Ignore
2nd Character – Front Spring
3rd Character – Ignore
4th Character – Rear Spring

Fog is less thick...

Ok so my bro's 96 V8 code is AF.

My 97 SOHC code is LH on the Door Sticker.

I guess I was getting confused because the cast stamps on my truck tbars reads 'UL'.

I STILL have no idea what the 'U' stamped on the end of my t bars means....

???

ok, I thought the stiffest bars were B, until late 99...

as I have never seen an A rated bar on anything under 2000.

may bad

Ok my bars say "F A" with the L and the arrow, door jamb sticker says A F, hope this helps.

Bill

I do believe the L is LEFT side.

there is right and left side bars, different part numbers.

:salute:

They don't all have a U unless that's your spring code.

Bill

There is no "U" code torsion bar used on RBVs.

I've had around 2dozen sets of these bars over the years ... They all have the letter "U" stamped in them, for some reason, before the spring code.

U is a rear spring code...torsion bars appear to have both front and rear spring codes stamped in them so that they match the application...which would explain the A F stamped in the ones under my truck, which, once again, coincide with the code in the door jamb. There's also the off chance that the L with the arrow is mistaken for a U (which I almost did with mine until I noticed the picture someone posted, which prompted a double look).

Bill

They most certainly do not stamp the rear spring code in the front spring. They have no clue what rear spring the vehicle is going to use when they stamp the front. They are stamped when they are produced, not when they are installed.

I have a hard time believing that all the vehicles I have stripped ( Rangers, Explorers, Sport Tracs, Mounties w/ ARC, etc) all had the same "U" code rear springs. I did a lot of research on RBV torsion bars while deciding what spring to run for my Cummins swap.

Maybe they don't all have the "U", ( you never know what Ford was thinking.) but the dozens I've held all had it, left or right side.

All great posts guys... I'm glad this sparked some interest. I thought, there has to be something to this that I'm missing...

By the sounds of it, the 'U' stamped in the bars doesnt seem to be that important.

By the sounds of it, some bars have both the front and rear spring ratings stamped in the tbars, some do not.

I already have replaced the rear leafs with a beefier option from a local shop, so now its time to beef up the front bars... we are going with some 'A' bars from a fellow forum'er.

Sounds like the stamp on your particular bars are referencing what the truck has for BOTH the front and rear.

So A is your front spring/bar rating and F is your rear rating.

Clear as mudd! lol
