Torsion Bar Ratings - ATTN 2Gen V8 4Drs. Please help...

U is a rear spring code...torsion bars appear to have both front and rear spring codes stamped in them so that they match the application...which would explain the A F stamped in the ones under my truck, which, once again, coincide with the code in the door jamb. There's also the off chance that the L with the arrow is mistaken for a U (which I almost did with mine until I noticed the picture someone posted, which prompted a double look).

Bill

This is part of the reason why i wanted people to reference their sticker and then actually GO LOOK at their tbar stamps and then post...

My sticker says 'LH'

My tbars say 'UL'.

I'll mention that my truck may have a questionable history...

If U truly is a REAR spring code as someone else has mentioned, then I don't doubt that the tbars currently installed may have come from another truck.

(Just fuels the fire of my small claim against the previous owner! yay! but thats another story...)

They most certainly do not stamp the rear spring code in the front spring. They have no clue what rear spring the vehicle is going to use when they stamp the front. They are stamped when they are produced, not when they are installed.

I have a hard time believing that all the vehicles I have stripped ( Rangers, Explorers, Sport Tracs, Mounties w/ ARC, etc) all had the same "U" code rear springs. I did a lot of research on RBV torsion bars while deciding what spring to run for my Cummins swap.

Maybe they don't all have the "U", ( you never know what Ford was thinking.) but the dozens I've held all had it, left or right side.

Valid points...

Do we have a list of 'Rear Spring Codes' someone could post?

Seems as though we have:

F (V8's?)
H (SOHC)
and *possibly
U (???)

Any one else can add to this list?

The spring rate can be modified by treatment. That's why I think the casting is rather related to the size of the hex (U) and length (Left or Right are different). For spring rate read the stickers on the bars.
