hi everyone, i basicaly need to know what should be at the adjusting end of torsion bar, previous owner droped front completely by taking the two torsion screws out, ive sorted out the two bolts i need but they came with two oblong thick spacers, looking under my car i see the torsion bar with hole for bolt and above the bar ( floor side ) i can see the two spacers there, do i just screw new bolts into bar or do i need to put the extra spacers on first then the bolts, hope that makes sense! then ive got to work out how far to raise car because not having bolts there its going to trail and error, cheers rob

Sorry can't help with spacer question but I can tell you that on my 98 it measured 34" from ground to center of wheel arch before I lifted her. Do allow for settling so roll car back and forth after adjusting.

torsion

hi cheers for info, any chance you could have a look under your car and see if its just the bolt going into bar, cheers rob

The bolt just pushes up on the torsion key. Looks like you'd put the little bar that the bolt threads onto, then tighten the bolt up. There's an indentation in the key that locates the bolt as far as I can tell (Mine's all caked up with mud).

torsion

hi thanks for that, ive put bolts in and started to raise car but bolts started to get very tight so im going to try and borrow a trolley jack and take the weight off suspension and lift it some more, hope it cures the whining noise, cheers rob

Yeah I'd lift the car up before trying those bolts.

how low does it sit at the front then? would it couse the shocks to bang at there limit?

torsion

hi no banging noises just a whine on load, was told its the cv joints maybe , car sits on 22" rims and to look at car it doesnt seem lower then rear, i will raise car to limit then drop inch by inch untill hopefully noise goes, cheers rob

torsion

hi raised car to the limit and drove car but still got noise, but now it makes a noise on slowing down, i dropped car height by an inch at a time but still no change, it was only when i got to low limit the noise stopped on slowing down but was still there on load, i raised car up to middle range and went underneath car and checked transfer box and rear diff oil levels and they are ok, theres no lateral play in front drive shafts or imput to transfer box but i did notice that where the propshaft joins rear diff its got a bit of play, its not the propshaft but the bit it joins, its got lateral play in it, but if its that thats making the noise why does noise alter when i adjust front height ? ive checked for play in front wheel bearings but they seem fine, the noise doesnt alter when i turn,it seems to be coming from front but i could be wrong, if i take off rear propshaft and noise stops would it point to rear diff ? is it ok to drive with it dissconnected, sorry for so many questions but its really doing my head in and spoiling the drive, cheers rob

mine made a whine when in 4x4 high or low,is your dash selector ok does it clonk when engaging in and out od low? i ve read on here if doing t/twist you shouldnt let drive shafts go more than 22degrees so i wonder if it went past that with no bolts in when the other guy lowered it ?cant think of anything else that would make that sound

torsion

hi selector seems ok, when i turn it to low or high i hear something going on underneath and it does whine more when i do select low or high, but noise seems to be coming from front, its a noise that happens when i apply load , if it was wheel bearings i would assume noise would be there all the time, i will try and raise car up to limit again and slowly drop inch by inch , i suppose having 22" wheels might be putting drive shafts out of line and causing the noise, i will keep ploding on and let you know cheers rob

rear diff bearing

hi update on whining noise, its coming from the rear, there is play in the input bit that goes into rear diff so im assuming its the bearing there, question is could i replace just that bearing without taking axle off, or could someone piont me to a how to thread id be most grateful, thanks rob

Hey carpcrew
Have you tried posting in the US section or searching in it.
I have a slight memory of people talking about a noise coming from a coupling in the prop.

pinion

hi tried usa side but not got much help there really, right if i go back to basics starting with noise is only there under load so that rules out wheel bearings as they i think make a constant noise, next would be pinion shaft bearings in rear diff, as noise is only there on load and having excessive play in input shaft this would be most likely, question is if i take rear casing off and dissconect prop and take off the input shaft nut located behind prop would the pinion shaft just pull out along with its bearings, that way i could take shaft and new bearings to a garage and have old taken off and new put on and install it back. hope that makes sense, your ideas would be great cheers rob

pinion

hi thanks i will have a look in the morning, will it be obvious that the joint is playing up, also do you think if i remove rear prop and drive it and see if noise goes it will narrow it down cheers rob

I believe it would eliminate the prop shaft at least. I think you need to see if there is play in the joint. Have you checked the back axle oil level? If it is a pinion bearing then the entire axle need to be disassembled as the pinion only comes out back wards. Special tools are required for adjustment, so not for the diyer.

rear diff bearing

hi im going to have a go at taking pinion shaft out and replacing bearings, i think there is two bearings and a calapsable washer and oil seal, i read up on other threads and if im right and hope you can correct me if im wrong, remove prop, undo pinion nut on prop flang, remove diff plate bolts and drain oil, undo pinion shaft lock nut and pull out pinion shaft, i will take new bearing and shaft to engineering firm and they can fit them along with colapsable washer, then i can put shaft in taking care not to turn shafts, does that sound about right ? also why is new pinion oil seal so expensive £64, cant i reuse old one, cheers rob
