I think I have located a 1998 S reg explorer (Blue) with 71k on the clock, it does not have a tow bar which I (my wife!) needs.

Is this something that I can fit? if so where do I get one, price etc

Hi Brian,

I would suggest looking at the Towsure website - http://www.towsure.com/ and see if they do a fitment for the Explorer.

You could also try Witter http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/, and if either of these have one it might then be worth looking on E-Bay to see if you can get it cheaper else where.

Also remember that if you wire the electrics yourself you need a repeater of some type, either visual or audiable for the trailer indicators in the truck.

I see no reason why you couldn't fit it yourself, although on certain age vehicles I believe that the towbar has to an approved type, and not something you built on your driveway at home.

Also you might find that if you fit the towbar yourself and then have an accident where the towbar fails or similar that your insurance company might decline to pay out as it wasn't fitted by an approved installer. To check this it might be worth phoning your insurance company and askign the question and then getting it in writting from them as well.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Cheers

Yes the latter, towing a trailer or in this case a horse box.

Carl thanks for the links I will check them out later after the purchase hopefully.

I've one fitted that I'm anxious to remove! Depending on what part of the country you live, the price of a few(?) beers, and that your willing to help remove it. It could be just the job. Not sure that the wiring harness works or how to disconnect it. Bob

Not that far away, I live in Aldeburgh Suffolk, but my son lives in Chelmsford so I go there regularly!

I am sure something could be sorted, re wiring, someone must know how they wire, those www sites will know.

Let me get the explorer first, then I will get back to u

The Explorer comes with trailer wiring already installed, with a US type plug, it is underneath the bumper, with a plastic plug cover. This is fitted as standard as you can just drop a towball in the bumper step and tow off of that, which is apparently not legal in the UK.

Someone on ebay i believe sells a connecters which transforms this in a EC style plug, one that plugs in and then runs to the two bar.
