model: '91 4WD EB, 207k miles.

X bought for one and only one reason: towing an open three rail motorcycle trailer with two vintage GP bikes on it (along with maybe 200 lbs. of gear in the back of the X) from Seattle to Kent, WA and from Seattle to Portland, OR about 14 times a year and maybe four yearly round trip drives to Laguna Seca (monterey, CA), San Francisco, Reno, and Salt lake City.

Trailer will weigh at most 1,000 lbs. including the two bikes and the gas cans (everything else is inside the X). Generally only one person in car and I only weigh 145 lbs. Other that several shake down drives to see if the repairs are working correctly, ALL of its miles will be highway miles.

There are a few hills between Seattle and Portland and some large hills in S. Oregon for trips to Laguna Seca. Lots of hills between here and Reno and Salt Lake.

Under these circumstances, should I buy a transmission cooler? If so, any suggested models and/or brands?

Does an after-market cooler replace the stock transmission cooler or is this something in addition to that?

I just posted this next question on the general list but wouldn't mind more feedback. If I'm tooling down I-5 to Portland and back, can I leave the X in OD with the above-described load? There are some smaller hills between Seattle and Portland but not anything substantial.

A tranny cooler couldn’t hurt, but I wouldn’t think it necessary. A 1000 lb trailer is light work for an Explorer, should pull it no problem. What I would do is ensure your fluid is fresh by way of a fluid and filter change. Its cheap insurance against tranny failure. Possibly look into partial or total synthetic fluid.

If you get a tranny cooler, it should be in addition to your existing cooler if you have one. OD should be OK too.

This is what I would do since your model year has transmission issues: get a cooler and put it inline with the factory one (if there is one) and just flush the old one to make sure it's clear and free flowing. I would highly suggest a trans cooler for any towing (or even just normal driving). A cooler transmission is a happy transmission.
