I ordered a Hidden Hitch Class III/IV hitch off Ebay yesterday. Maybe I shouldn't be asking this question if I plan on towing (makes me sound ignorant) but I'm assume I'm going to need a converter box to plug into the factory connector behind the rear bumper. Or do I?

My Subaru was wired for a trailer but I had to get one of those Hoppy converter boxes to go from 5 to 4 wires to pull my 4X8 utility trailer.

I'm planning on renting a car hauler and I've heard most have eneria brakes so you don't need a brake controller.

I read a post here about U-haul not renting to Explorer owners because of the defective tire deal. So they don't want to be involved no matter what if someone is still running those defective tires (which I am not). Also anyone know if Enterprise or Ryder will rent car haulers to Explorer owners?

I've had my Explorer less than a week and haven't had time to call around to find out.

So do I need a converter box for my Explorer or just a simple plug adapter which will connect to a standard car hauler? Or is the connector on the vehicle already matched for something like this?

Thanks.

There's a pig tail that you can purchase from most auto parts stores that plugs in up by the drivers side tail light under the car. The trailer should have a four prong plug if not they do supply the adaptors. Uhaul will not rent to an explorer because they were sued over the Tire thing so dont bother with them as fare as the other companies I dont know.

Just make sure you get the proper adapter... they changed the pin arrangement sometime in the middle of the '97 model year IIRC... The later model connector is a different part number. The dealership *may* be able to get one... try Torrie at www.fastpartsnetwork.com If anyone can find one, he can.

Has anyone every had any luck renting from some other company? Like Enterprise or Ryder? I'm going on a wild goose chase this weekend.
