I tried to buy a trailer hitch (5000 pound receiver type) at Pep Boys and they told me it will interfere with the spare tire under the truck. They said that they can get one, but the spare tire will need to come out. Has anyone installed one and is this true?

Where did you buy it?
Brand name?

Thanks

I know the measurements have changed slightly from my '97 to your '00 but regardless, any hitch made specifically for an '00 Sport should work without interfering with the factory spare. I was able to cram a larger spare under mine with my Hidden Hitch. The one you were looking at at Pep Boys was probably an over-priced generic one. Look on the internet for getting one on-line. You'll save some money. Just be sure and get one made for an '00 SPort. Start with Hidden Hitch, Draw Tite and Reese.

1999 Limited - Hidden Hitch Install

I have a 1999 Limited (4 door - V8 - AWD) and am in the process of installing a hidden hitch. The retailer told me that it would require some modification for my 16" spare. He was correct, because I have tried to lift the spare in to place, without the proper modification. I have to bend the forward portion of the tire mouting bracket about a 1/2" further forward in order to get the tire in. This has turned out to be a little more difficult than anticipated, do to the thickness of the part. It is going to have to be heated with an acetylene torch in order to bend it....now I just have to find a friend with an acetylene torch. Anyhow, that's just my experience so far.

Ive got the Hidden Hitch Class III under my truck wif the 16in spare tire under there. Didnt have to use no torch to bend the bracket. Just use a rubber mallet and beat the crap out of it. I also used my show kickin it. It will bend. Also when you are putting it back up into there angle the tire so one side goes in first instead of both sides going up at once. Mine works just fine.

Thanks for the info. I'll try the rubber mallet approach after work this evening.
