Did you happen to stick a test light or meter in the socket to make sure it's ok there?

I ask this because it always seems that my problem always lies in the damned trailer, bad ground here, bad ground there...gets frustrating.

I noticed that the plug you bought shows all the F-Series trucks but not the Explorer. Could be that the pin-out is different.

I would get one from the Ford Dealer. I have purchased 3 for 3 different Explorers and all have worked fine.

I also agree with checking the plug kit, when i did my 96 i didn't have the tow kit and had to install a converter because of the dual tail bulbs.
But when i was reading up on it, with the search feature here, i recall something about the tow kits using seperate relays in the back left compartment and possible something about them needing a ground circuit to operate, that came in the factory plug?
Sorry im not much more up on it.

Dumb question but you know that white wire with the piece on the end needs to go to ground?
