97XLT V8 AWD
Hello,
I have a 97 AWD I just purchased cheap and it sounded like the drivers side cv joint was going out so I replaced it and has not changed the clunking nosie that I located to be coming from the transfer case. When the vehicle is put under any strain it pops loudly from underneath. Since it is awd it pops louder when its turned sharp one way or the other. The oil in the case was black and smelled to be burnt.

My Question is; can the transfer case make such a noise, what causes it, and where to find a quality rebuild kit for it? including hard parts.

Could someone tell me what the transfer case model # is for a 97 awd v8?

Are there chains inside of these or are they a clutch type system?

Thanks for the help,
Gary

I have a 97 xlt 4wd. The xfer case output shaft to the rear has about 1/16 inch radial play in it. The ujoints are good. The truck has had a strong vibration on acceleration, which I thought was coming from the front end. It stops when the truck shifts into OD. I just discovered the output shaft play on the xfer case. Could this be making the vibration? How much can I expect to pay for an overhauled xfer case installed? Also, is there a way to check the torque converter bolts and plate? Thanks.
