Does anyone know how often the transfer case motor goes out?
When I switch my explorer into 4wd the light on the dash will go on and the truck feels like it in 4wd, but then the light on the dash will go out and then about a minute later it will flash a few time and go back out. I haven’t been able to verify that the truck is out of 4wd at that time.
Is this a sign the motor is bad? and how do I test?
Suggestions?

Diagnosis of the transfer-case and 4WD operation issues usually requires full computer diagnostics. In your case, this issue can be caused by many things including, but not limited to: faulty Hall sensors or electrical connections between the Hall sensors and the GEM, faulty GEM, 4x4-mode switch, a bad BOO (brake on/off) switch or related electrical connections or different/incorrect tire sizes.

The shift motor has nothing to do with 4wd. All it does is shift between high and low. If you can shift to low its not the shift motor.
