I posted about a week (5r55e rebuild promblem) I have a 98 explorer with the 4.0 ohv motor and the tod transfercase. i just put a rebuilt tranny in it and it barely pulls forward kinda like the bands are slipping, reverse works fine. i have adjusted the bands. today i just got in and let it get to about 35 mph and it did not shift once once it got up to 30 to 35 it felt like it was doing better. I think it might be stuck in a high gear 4th or overdrive maybe. does any one know what might cause this. its starting to drive me crazy. i have also ohm out the solanoid pack wich seems to be fine.

thanks trlemarr

Welcome to this forum! Even though the transmission was rebuilt, they might have reused the old solenoids. It sounds like the EPC solenoid isn't regulating the proper amount of hydraulic pressure. The valve body bolts might have to be retorqued. I assume that they used new gaskets, or the separator plate with the bonded gaskets.

What is the EPC solanoid and how do i check. i took the pan down and ohmedthe solanoids that i found in there. They seemed to be fine. I compared themto the ones out of my old tranny and the numbers where close to them just more consistent among the four in the middle and the two on the out side on the driver side where within points of an ohm different then the ones on my old tranny.

You have to use a pressure gauge on the port outside of the transmission. It is a 0-300 psi gauge. The EPC, and TCC solenoids are modulated, so a simple ohm test isn't good enough. Rotunda makes a special transmission tester that Glacier991 lends out in certain cases with a deposit. Here's a link on how to use a transmission pressure gauge: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117998

I have adjusted the bands more. and now the explorer takes off in 1st just fine but seems to skip second and possibly third gear but does shift into a higher gear. the tranny also tries to pull forward in all gear selections ingluding 1st and nuetral. so i took it to a tranny shop and they looked at it for free wich the free part is what makes me wonder. but they say the gear box is locked to together is this possible? and if so how does the tranny shift up and down with the gears locked together. Is there a chance it could still be the band adjustment since it went from not going forward to going forward in 1st and what ever other gear it is going into since the last adjustment?

thanks trlemarr
