My 92 won't shift from 1st to 2nd when cold. If I start out in 1st and shift it to 2nd and 3rd manually when its cold its fine. After about 5 minutes of warming up it works fine the rest of the day until it sits and cools for about 2 hours or so. Truck has about 85,000 miles on it.
I did a search for this but came up empty.

Do a search on "Speed governor". A sticking governor when cold is the number one possibility that would cause that condition. It can be repaired without taking the trannie out of the car. In the useful threads section there is a link to the "explorer Maintenance Page"... on there there is some info on it. I have pics of it in the "My A4LD Rebuild Diary"...section 2 I believe... not sure exactly.

Thanks Glacier991. I was thinking governer or modulator. I couldn't remember which was for what speed or part of shifting. Guess the old lady that had it since new never changed the trannie fluid OR filter because if I remember correctly the governer (metal pieces?) got sticky and needed cleaning from dirty fluid. Am I close? Also its in the tail shaft right, so hence the no need to pull trannie out. Its been a long time and I don't know if I want to going under my truck to do this with floor jacks and jack stands.
Anyhow, thanks for the info.
BTW: I did the search that you told me to do and found it but I cannot open any links when I am on a thread. I posted my problem in the suggestion box ( only place I saw guys asking questions like mine) which is probably the wrong forum but we'll see.
