hey people. i was moving my truck earlier today and i ran into a problem. while moving in reverse down a hill into a parking spot, all of a sudden, i hear a loud clunk from underneath and my X slows down to a crawl while in reverse going down a hill. now i have been told three things so far and i was looking to hear from you people on what i was told.

#1 reverse is shot

#2 the linkage is busted

#3 i blew the gasket on the rear differential

after hearing #3 i went under my X and saw the bottow of the rear differential was covered with oil. upon further examination, i noticed that the rubber like gasket was hanging out and ripping apart. now do u guys think its #3 or what. going foward, i have no problems, or the problems are so small i cant notice them yet. i was told by someone who is pretty knowledgable that when this happens to fords, it tends to mess up reverse more than foward movement. i appreciate all your input. thnaks a lot in advance.

The rear diff. doesn't make sense to me, if it was the diff, you wouldn't have forward or reverse. It sounds to me like it is in the tranny.

did i mention that is has 63k on it. i think i forgot. i know there were ptoblems with the old al4d trannys or whatever they were called, buti h ave the 5 spd auto. how could i possibly have lost reverse at 63k, or could it be the linkage?

diff cover ummmm NO
linkage Probably not considering that it is just on lever to the tranny
internal unfortunatley probably

I would take it to a trans shop and get them to listen to it maybe a quick test drive and get their opinion

what i meant to say was that i might of blewthe gasket and lost the fluid in the rear diffy. would a lack of fluid cause it to sieze up like that.

and if the problem is unfortunately the tranny itself, what do u guys think it would cost to fix reverse? thanks a bunch.

finally i got it towed to a reliable shop today and founf out what was the matter with it. everybody including my self was wrong. it was the parking brake cable. what a relief. i should have it back tomorrow evening.
