I'm having the same thing happen to me it either does it if i brake hard or if i brake lightly its random i've been looking for an answer everywhere

found anything yet tom153?

Very common problem.

Fixes include replacing the Solenoid pack in the trans. Instructions: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=164055&highlight=solenoid+pack

Where to buy: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2053839&postcount=31

It has also been suggested that the dealer can re-flash the PCM and fix the problem. I've read where some have gone to dealers and were told there was no such update. Apparently there is and IIRC it costs approx $150. (However, this may be for a slipping issue between 2nd-3rd gear and not the kick)

A search on Solenoid pack and related key words will bring up alot of discussion.

does your explorer feel like it lurches fowards when you get that downshift kick

I love the name of this thread... Kinky! :D

tom i forgot cuz it just stop doing it but i did rebuilt my rear diff.... lol it is a nice thread

so wait you rebuilt your rear diff and it stopped doing it?

i really dont know if the rebuild did anything but i rebuild the rear diff and it only happend like 2 times then it stoped but as a mechanic i can feel more problems then my wife can. i still do feel it but not as bad as befor so i really dont know if the rebuild did anything. some one told me befor that if you drop the pan do a flash and just tap the pack it might help.the thing is i already put in two rear springs, rebuild tranny with new converter and tranny pump, rear hub, rebuild rear diff with all new parts so i really dont wanna drop pan put in new filter tap the pack and add new atf cuz i am out of money with this truck... let me know if you got your problem fixed

I had the same issue with both upshift and down shift, and when going from Park to Reverse, took it to the stealership for a diagnostic, they suggested I had to get my solenoid pack replaced; $1200 w/ labor... yea.. I didn't do it. Actually took it to my local mechanic, got a tranny flush and replaced the fluid and filter, good as new for now.

I was warned by dealer that three supports of front axel must be replaced but labour was so expensive i decided to posponed such work. Parts prices al reasonable, but replecing them might took 5 or 6 hours

Our '04 started doing this about 10k miles ago at about 75k miles. It happens mostly when my wife drives it. I find that it happens when she's driving fast and comes to a stop. It happens while downshifting from 2nd to 1st. When I drive it, I am more of the "tortoise" and it rarely happens to me.

Recently it was time to have the tranny serviced so the shop we have this down at said it was the solenoid body that needing replacing. Didn't have it done though.
