2004 Explorer XLT
My new 2004 Explorer XLT seems to jerk occasionally when accelerating up a slight hill around 47-49 mph.

I took it in not long after I got because I did not think it was changing gears properly. They said it was.

The fist time I noticed the jerking problem was on a rainy day. The roads were wet but not flooded, I was accerating normally. It was jerking so bad the wife said something was wrong.

Now it is more noticeable when accelerating up a hill at around 47-49 mph.

Someone said it may the ABS system. Did not want to take it dealership without some history of this problem.

Figured they would just snowball me.

It is often very difficult to distinguish transmission problems versus engine problems in the situation you describe. I'm not sure we can help you here....

Do you know what rpm's it's at at that speed? It sounds to me like the spark plugs are bad or improperly gapped, just kinda suprised that they would be on a new vehicle. That's probably a good/easy place to start, it fixed my X when it was doing what you described.

I like the spark plug thing. I just got a 2004 Ranger, a week old, and noticed a miss or jerk when I would open the throttle. Turned out I had a bad wire and foulded plug. I eventually got a check engine light. If you pull the plugs and examine them they will show you if there is a problem with engine combustion.

Mine (96 4.0) was doing that as well, around 2k rpm. Changed the plugs and wires. Problem solved. :)
