I have a 94 Exploder 4x4, auto tranny. It is just dripping tranny fluid like crazy from the front pump seal. It doesn’t drip when cold, but once the engine warms it leaks like crazy. I have been doing some reading that a clogged vent tube can cause this condition. Make sense as it was recently off-road and in deep muddy water. Could this be the cause?

Where is the vent tube exactly located? Can it be serviced w/o dropping tranny?

The vent should be located on top of the trans near the transfer case mounting flange. If your trans is getting hot enough to blow fluid out then you may have damaged it already. Make sure that the cooler lines are not kinked or damaged and if you have the aux cooler in front of the radiator, make sure its clean of mud and debris.

The worse enemy of auto transmissions is heat. Make sure you run it as cool as you can. I would flush the system too just to make sure the coolers are clear on the inside. Also heat breaks down the lube properties of oil, i would change the oil and filter ASAP.

Its not that it’s getting too hot, it might be too much pressure if that is clogged. I don't think it’s clogged, but I am hoping it is. Its a mud truck so you never know. Ultimately, I will be replacing a seal most likely.

chris, I posted a link in your other thread. A *how to*/ *all about front seals*.

That vent is not exactly a tube, think it's more like a metal cap, a mushroom shaped thing. 92exp4x4 would know.

Sounds like it might be a pain to check to see if its clogged. :(

On thinking about it some more, even if the vent was clogged there's still the dipstick tube for venting. So, that should be a non issue. I'd say your seal is blown anyway.
Look for the damage the other guys have suggested. Maybe you'll luck out and it'll be something small.

I don't think that the vent tube is your problem. Check the coolant level, and the fan clutch.

truck has an external cooler separate from the radiator. I know the tranny isn't over heating especially because its 20* outside and fluid is not really hot to the touch. Just thought maybe since this truck has had an off-road life there was a chance it wasn't venting properly.
