Tranny going???

I recently bought a 96 explorer xlt V6. Very nice. The problem is that it has a hard time shifting. The shift from 1st to 2nd is rough. 2nd to 3rd is sometimes rough and the rest of the shifts seem to shift into gear too soon. The downshift from 2nd to 1st is really rough. I have heard about vacuum modulators or modulator valve...but a couple mechanics told me the 96's dont have that. Its all electronic. So, where do I go from here? Anybody know?
Please help... I dont want to put money towards a new tranny

often a complete going thru of the valve body and checking and replacing solenoids has been a panacea to these problems.
