Tranny Help Needed....

ok... so I posted up that I'd had the codes read and it apparently needs some new solenoids n stuff... all in all about $150 in parts.. maybe...

it's a 96 4.0 OHV auto and I've been offered the auto out of a 99 sport 4.0 OHV.... are they interchangeable?

or is it true that the speedo pick up has moved? do they have interchangeable parts?

Any help would be great, thanks guys

The 96 has a 4R55E & the 99 has a 5R55E. Your profile says 1997 Explorer?

Don't give up so fast. You could use the one from the 99 with some minor valve body modifications. Are both 4WD?

yeah both are 4x4... I heard that the pick up for the speedo is on the rear axle from 98 onwards...

So how would I go about making the newer one fit the older vehicle?

Do you have the sensor on your transfer case? If so, then you don't have to do anything. Your profile says 4 speed in the 97. You should have a 5 speed 5R55E in the 97.

the trans in question is for his girlfriends fathers Ex, it is a 96 with control trac,

i would guess what BB was getting at was that the speed sensor for the trans is actually in the T case , so, if you swap the trans , but keep the same T case it would have the speed sensor in it, and it would work for you

I will look today , i may actually have a trans for that Explorer here, , but out of an Aerostar , ,

hey Brooklyn, i have the trans out of a 96 aerostar , with torque converter , is it the same as in the 96 Explorer ?
motor is the same, 4.0, auto overdrive,

It should be the same 4R55E if the Aerostar had E-4WD. The 4X4 extension housing should be the same.

Hey Simon, it appears it is the right trans for his Ex,
