Hey guys! im new here to serious explorations, although i have seen the site before. i used to have a 91 eddie on a 4 1/2 inch lift and 33's now ive acquired a 96 XLT with a bad transmission. i have a spare 96 sitting right next to the new one. my question is, the transmission was run out of fluid. meaning ran dry! the girl that had it before me didnt keep up on it. i am a mechanic and i know what im doing mechanically, but not with transmissions. not internal i mean. so my question is, the truck will now only go into drive and park. what could the possible damage be? torque converter? flywheel? when i start it i hear this clang sound then it starts just fine. but if i idle up in park it only goes to around 2 g's and is vibrating bad. do you think i should narrow this to one part or just swap the transmissions out from the parts truck? im kinda lost. thanks for the help!!:D

"Vibrating bad"--- You can feel this? Does it take lots of "pedal" to rev up, like something is dragging? Transmission "run dry" almost can't happen, unless major leak occurs, vehicle will quit moving WAY BEFORE trans. is DRY, then usually it gets shut off.......Broken parts in trans. MIGHT cause vibration, but this description of yours sounds more like engine problems to me, with trans. trouble a separate issue. Just my 2 cents.....imp

no the thing revs just fine. i mean without a lot of gas, just wont go over 2k the transmission was run dry over time. the truck starts just fine. no lagging, idles fine. just only stays in drive. no reverse no 1,2,3, just park and drive........ im lost.

sorry also forgot it is leaking majorly, bad from the flex plate area. but will hold fluid long enough to drive it short distances, also there is no check engine or check gauges light on. and when i stop..... ohhh nelly, i smell burnt tranny fluid

swap the trans and the converter rebuild the blown one put it back in and roll

thanks chris, sounds like a plan, ive beeen swapping interior parts all day. cluster, various junk ya know..... lol. would the torque converter being screwed up limit the idle rpm?

i had a 96 a few months ago that wouldn't start. thought starter was bad, but bought it anyways. the guy said it shuttered going into reverse. i didn't change that one, had a friend do it at his shop. when he took the starter out, chunks of flywheel where laying at the bottom. he pulled the trany out, the flywheel was broken, and because of that, it punchered the converter. as for not going in the gears, there might be a broken band in it.

ok, well the decision seems to swap it out than, the other truck is low miles so everything is in good shape. although its been sitting a while, but im sure a flush and filter change on the tranny will do just fine. i also swapped the cluster from my parts truck because i noticed the check engine light wasnt coming on at start up then i checked again with the new cluster, and i got it at start like its suppose to, then went out after the initial check. so tomorrow ill put my scanner on it to check for anything just in case but i think ill be ok engine wise. thanks guys for your input. i really appreciate it.
