I'm so depressed at this moment, I just started this thread to vent. Allow me to tell my tale of woe...
18 months ago, the tranny on my 91-XLT 4x4 started leaking fluid like a sieve, so down to the local tranny shop I went. The seals were gone, and while they had it open they said the guts were on the verge of failure, as I had over 150,000 on the original tranny. The guy talked me into a re-build for $1,800 and I bit. With my one year warranty in hand, I drove away thinking I had a tranny to last me another 100,000.
15 months later (now) it has started acting up. It shifts in & out of overdrive at highway speeds rather violently. Scared the crap outta me the first time! Since I'm no tranny-man, I searched out the same guy to see whats up, and hope for a little extension on that one year warranty. When I got to the joint I see "Under new ownership" all over the place, and a bright shiny new sign with the name of a major chain. When I ask the new manager what happened to the old guy, he says "He got out of the business...now he sells used cars in another state. We bought his shop, fired his crew and brought in our own guys".
The new guys drop the tranny and crack it open to see whats up, and what do they find? Among other things the jerk didnt replace the torque converter and other assorted parts, putting the old stuff back into the shiny new tranny (or so it looked from the outside). Of course he's long gone, so I'm up the proverbial creek. Now I get to pay $1500 to rebuild once more, with a new torque converter this time. (The new MGR felt pitty on me, and being new in town wanted to spread some community goodwill so he gave me a break on his normal price. oh boy.)
And oh yeah....another one year warranty.
