A few months ago I was going home in my 91' for explorer sport when I tried to take off from a stop light and it just sat there and revved. I was confused and looked down to make sure i was in drive. Yep, I was in drive all right. I've never had a problem with the transmission before, and all of a sudden it won't shift into 1st gear, when it does shift into first it slips like mad. It had the same problem shifting into any other gears, and slipped just as bad in the higher gears too. I took the insurance and license off it and it sat for two months until my uncle told me he needed me to move it. I went out, started it up, shifted into drive, expecting to wait about 5 minutes for it to shift as it was doing before, but it shifted right away like new. I took it out a bit until it was warmed up and romped it liked crazy until I was thoroughly convinced the tranny wasn't ruined. My question is, what can cause this? I believe it has the A4LD tranny. If its still driveable I don't want it sitting there collecting wasps nests. I appreciate any feedback and thanks in advance!

maybe it overheated.

Gremlins:D

Flush it out and change the filter. What color is the fluid now?

Well, the fluid/filter should be good, i know the seals in the tranny were bad and my mechanic put new seals, a filter, and new fluid in it about a month before. But maybe its worth doing again... The engine temp was low, and I was about a block away from where i worked, so i doubt the tranny could have overheated that fast.
