My brother was driving my 92 Explorer (4X4 - Auto) on the highway about a month ago. He just left for a long trip. He was maybe 30 miles into the trip when the Tranny stopped working. He tried revving, but nothing.

He checked to see if it had popped into neutral, but it was in gear.

The Tranny had NEVER slipped or acted up since I bought it. (About a year and a half earlier, I had only put 10,000 kms in her - 6,000 miles.)

He said that the Tranny never slipped on him. IT was like it just went dead.

I thoroughly questioned him about symptoms and what not.

He said it did not slip, did not give any sign or warning. IT just stopped working.

I changed the Tranny fluid and filter when it came back but nothing. No signs of an attempt to go into any gear. No feel or anything when it’s running. I checked the tranny linkage, and it is fine.

When the engine is running and I put the Tranny back in park I hear what sounds like a gear kind of rubbing / grinding against another one but it does not catch.

The parking gear does not work right now.

I was wondering if perhaps it could be the Tranny Pump or Torque Converter.

I found it very strange that the Tranny Never Slipped. EVER! (Or showed any signs of excessive wear / hard shifting).

In Case it matters the Truck has about 260,000 kms on her now.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I CAN NOT afford to bring the truck in for Tranny work. I am very handy and love doing any work on cars myself.

Plus I never liked the idea of paying 50 bucks an hour to let someone play with my truck :D

Thanks guys :)

I look forward to getting her running, and then making her better!

Sorry, but if it won't go into gear and that many miles, it's probably toast. The transmission you have doesn't have a good reputation. I went through 3 on my '92

the first thign I would do is check all the external linkages... if ok, then pull the pan and check all the internal linkages. The so called "Z" link may have gotten unhooked somehow. The fact you do not get the parking pawl to engage in park is a strong hint (though not a certainty) of a linkage issue. Check that first. Then check to make sure the filter has the O-rings on it and is in place- that the correct bolt was used.... that could cuase a lack of pressure (but would not explain the lack of parking pawl engagement.) Let us know what you find. (might want to put in a drain plug while you are at it <g>.)

(The "parking gear" as you refer to it, is really just a rod that locks a gear.... it is PURELY mechanical, activated by linkage and shifter movement. Take a look at the A4LD Rebuild Diary in useful threads for pictures and more explaination)

Mine did the same thing...no slipping...just quit working and there was a grinding noise when i put it in gear.Turned out to be the torque converter
