Tranny issues

I have a 1992 explorer I bought with a bad transmissuon. I have changed it with one I thought was going to be good, however I have some wierd (to me) problems. The tranny fluid is full, and has a new filter. If I shift it from park to reverse, it works fine. But if I put it in OD or drive it acts like it's low on fluid. If I put it in 2nd, it engages and takes off fine. From there I can place it in drive or OD and it operates normal. I can come to stops and it takes off like it should. But if I place it in park I have to start in 2nd again to get going. I have dropped the pan and ohlmed the solenoids, and they seem to be fine with a reading of 31 - 32. Any advice would be super helpful. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the vacuum modulator is working properly, and has vac hooked to it? Your 1-2 shift is dependent on good vacuum and a good modulator with the rod properly installed and modulator seated well.

As I was driving home last night I wondered if it might be vacuum related. Is there a way to test the vacuum modulator?

There may be a "scientific" way to test one, with a vac pump, but the only way I know of is to pull the vac line and check for trans fluid. It should not have any in it. But it may not be the modulator itself -- maybe the little rod is missing, a common reinstall mistake, especially these days as most installers are used to electronic transmissions.

The rod that the modulator pushes gets lost, and doesn't get reinstalled...affecting the 1-2 shift. The only way to know that, is to pull the modulator and carefully look for the rod. I would double check the fluid level first though, the A4LD is really sensitive to low fluid condition.

Ok so little update. Changed the vacuum modulator and the govenor. It worked properly 1 time but now it's back to doing the same thing. However, now it is smoking white smoke like I'm spraying for bugs. Did I get a bad modulator?

Remove the vacuum line and check for transmission fluid in the line, if the engine is burning transmission fluid through the vacuum line it will smoke pretty bad.

^^ this plus, with the line disconnected, blow out the vac line with compressed air to clear it of fluid.
