I have a 98 4.0 SOHC (with 5 sp AUTO) 4x4 xlt with 129,000 miles. Please help, any info appreciated.

About once a week this happens:
I will decelerate when approaching a stop light after going 35-45 MPH. When I am nearly stopped I can tell the engine is lugging. The explorer lurches forward and then as I stop the vehicle, the engine dies (rather is killed by the tranny).
Either it is staying in too high a gear and not downshifting out of 3rd gear or the torque converter is satying locked up or something like that. After restarting the engine sometimes it will kill it a time or two and require revving up to 1500 RPM to "break it loose".
It then drives fine for another 100 miles.
It goes 70 MPH down the highway no problem. It starts out in 1st and has plenty of power, no noises or slipping is noticed.

Also, my front end has some noises. I was on a rough road and all of a sudden at 60 MPH my front end began to shake violently. It even shook the steering wheel. It only stopped when I got down to 30 MPH or so. I had this happen several months ago. I replaced the ball joints up front on both sides.
Is it something in the axle or steering? I do have a little noise when turning Left.

Please help. Should I sell it, repair it (what do I start with?). It has a lot of miles soo...

THANKS,

Lee
