My tranny has been making funny noises and would like to get everyone's input.

I have a 96 explorer limited with control trac, and when it shifts from O/D to D, it makes a low, moaning noise when shifting. It shifts fine, no slipping. It also rarely makes the noise when shifting into O/D from D.

Thanks for your help!

Welcome davenport:D Does it do it all the time? How many miles do you have on her?

Thanks Clinton,

It does not do it all the time. It seems to do it more after i run it for awhile. It has 52,000 miles on it

Thanks:)

Wow thats low mileage:) How often do you service the tranny?

So was this ever rebuilt?

The reason I ask is that they sell rebuilt overdrive drums. One failure is that there are castle teeth that sometimes bend over when the overdrive adaptor "star washer" goes bad. This section is ground off on the rebuilt part that some use instead of a new part. They press on a new metal tooth collar and give it a couple of tig welds that don't look like they would hold much. I could see this spinning and then locking. There is also a snap ring that holds in the OD clutches that can jump out of the groove. They designed a new spring retainer to solve this. All I can say is time will tell.

I just got the thing a couple months ago. I cannot imagine it has been rebuilt with 52,000 miles, but who knows.

Obviously

You havent read many posts here. Your transmission is still basically the A4LD which had a lot of problems with overdrive. My 92 has lost the overdrive twice as a result of things snapping instead of wearing out. In fact my clutches and bands are in near perfect condition after more than 70K. I don't even think they were replace the last time they were rebuilt so they could have over 200K on them. It's hard to diagnose from this distance when you don't have a hard failure. How does the fluid look. Wipe the dipstick on a paper towel and look for a dark stain (metal powder) that shows up. Some is normal but if it is cleaned off and shows up a week later, it may be time to drop the pan and see if there is sediment building up. Certainly changing the filter and some fluid at this time would be appropriate maintenance anyway.

If the prior owner had work done at Ford, info S/B in their computer. I'd start by having the fluid flushed and the filter changed. I have a feeling the tranny maintenance was never done, and with these, it's a good idea to have them serviced every 30K

Thanks for the help. I will change the fluid this weekend, do you think i should do a full fluid flush? There has been a couple of links that explain the full flush that i have seen but i cannot remember where the thread is. Can someone please help me out. By the way, everyone has very been poilite and helpful and i thank you all. I can help with some car stereo needs, so if anyone needs help with that, i am good at that.

Thanks to everyone
