My explorer makes a clunking or clanking noise when i ease off the gas and coasting or slowing down. I went underneath and shook the drive shaft and notice that the sound was coming from the rear of the transmission, possible where the drive shaft meets transmission. Is there a bearing there or a pinion of sort, when i shake the shaft i hear the sound like there is some play in the transmission. I can't figure out if its the transmission mounts or something else.

I have a 98 4wd eddie bauer 4.0 sohc. It is an automatic with 118,000 miles. I just changed the u joints this pass weekend hoping this would do the trick but the sound is still happening but its not as bad. What worries me is that there is play in the connection between the tranny and the drive shaft. thanks for your ideas.

welcome
