hello this is my first post. I have a problem. My 91 explorer just had a rebuilt a4ld put into it, includeing a shift kit, new electronics, and bw clutches, and a new converter. It now has 4000 miles on it and this problem occured. When the tranny kickes into 4th gear the converter starts kicking in and out.It stays locked in if i am at 50 mph or lower, after that it starts going crazy. Also if i am at 2500 give or take 200 rpm my check engine light comes on. I had the codes scaned and it came up with these codes, 54-iat sensor circuit open, 63-tps out of range low, 66-maf out of range low. I need help any answers would be greatfull. thank you

Welcome. I had a problem with my Torque Converter Clutch not engaging, or kicking out after a bit after warming up. It ended up being a dirty MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow). I cleaned it (again - since I do it every six months or so) and all is well. There are lots of threads on cleaning that in this forum. The other codes may or may not be a problem. The tps is throttle position sensor. I'm not sure of iat. Enjoy :D Got 195K on my 94 and no major problems - yet (other than a very abused tranny rebuild).

Torque converter clutch (TCC) operation is controlled by the EEC-IV computer. The principle inputs the computer uses to decide when to lock and unlock the TCC are vehicle speed and throttle position and engine temperature. I would say there's a reasonable chance your TCC behavior is related to one or more of those codes. If I were diagnosing this, I would start by resolving those codes. If the problem isn't resolved, then move on to something else.

1) Are those KOEO, KOER, or CM codes? See my notes on pulling EEC-IV codes in the EEC-IV forum, if needed. What parts did it pass (11)? SOP is to resolve any KOEO codes, then any KOER codes. Then, clear CM codes, test drive, and see what codes come back and work from there.
2) Remember that codes point to problems with circuits, not sensors. The sensor is only one part of the circuit.
