My 92 tranny went out again after about 6 months. Yes, it was a used one, however, it had just been rebuilt about 10k miles prior to me installing it. No, I don't know who rebuilt it. The people that I paid to install it (I was too lazy to do it) forgot to put the tranny fluid in the transfer case after they did the job. I put it in afterwards myself. I found that one of the upper bolts from the tranny to the block was missing. Not sure if this was the cause of the melt down or not... Anyhow, I was noticing a little slipping on the highway, but tried to make it to work anyway. Got off the exit and came to a light. When the light turned green, I hit the case, heard a loud "boom" and smoke rolling out the back of my truck. Peddle to the floor and I was going all of 20 mph. Smoke filled the cab and I had to roll down the windows. After parking the truck @ work, I noticed what I thought was tranny fluid all over the back. I checked and the fluid level was fine as well as the oil. I can't figure out what exactly happened. I am getting ready to get another tranny, but was wondering if anyone can tell from my description what happened?!

What did it smell like? Was it like burning fluid?

It smelt burnt...had to roll down the windows...I thought it was because the fluid was pouring onto the exhaust....

The fluid level should be low if this much fluid leaked out. Maybe the front seal blew out? This is a common problem on this transmission.

Ok...stupid question...is that an easy fix or do I need to replace the tranny? Any links to where to look would be helpfull.

The transmission has to come out to replace the front seal. Sometimes it's necessary to replace the front bushing. This should also be done on a certain lathe to cut it in place. I'm only aware of 2 places in the US which perform this kind of service.

The "loud boom" has me concerned. We are all just jumping at straws here. Put it in the air and crawl under it. It should be obvious where all that oil is coming from. If necessary, dump some more oil in it to see where it's leaking. But I'll bet when you get under it, you'll find the problem fast.

Been there, done that...like I said, there is none missing...It has me puzzled too. I think I will just put in a new tranny since I have to take this one out anyway. I will get this one rebuilt to and use it for a spare.

Do yourself a favor, put in an M5OD and you won't have to keep a spare (proably get better MPG too). I wouln't trust an A4LD further than I can throw one.
