My 00' XLS has the 2-3 flare and has had it since i bought it. I took it in to a tranny shop and he said the valve body gaskets are blown and that i should replace them. But he also said that he cannot guarantee that this will fix my problem since i don't know how long it has been driven like this. I asked him about the EPC solenoid and he said that he doubted that was the problem since no codes were thrown up and my other shifts are just fine. I aslo asked if he could do a shift kit and he recommended i didn't since the tranny has almost 100k on it and it could cause further damage. What should i do here? Just have them change the vb gaskets or should i have him do the epc also? Any help appreciated.

At 100,000 I'd replace the EPC, they do wear out and don't throw a code as they do. It would be good insurance. A shift kit would not hurt anything but it is up to you. I would add the FORD TSB mod as well.

If you haven't read the 5R55E valve body rebuild Diary I recommend it. It is in the sticky threads above.

Well i went ahead and had the vb gaskets replaced without the epc and it is alot better but not perfect. I don't get any slipping unless i really push it hard(still 2-3 flare). The mechanic said that there is probably something else wrong since it had been driven so long with blown out gaskets. Wish i would've had him do the shift kit anyway. I did read the vb diary and really wanted to do this but with no garage and in the middle of winter , i just wanted to get this fixed asap. Guess i might have to tackle the epc (and other mods , if i get the balls too) when it gets warmer.

The EPC is something easy to do without removing anything other than the pan and filter.
