Ok I have a 99 xlt 4x4 with a sohc motor. I'm getting a shifting problem and a slight metal rubbing noise that sounds like a wheel bearing but is definitely coming from the center of the vehicle (tranny/or transfer case). The shifting problem is like a hit that shakes and vibrates the vehicle and sometimes I have to let off the gas to get it to down shift. It doesnt feel like its slipping though. I dont know what model tranny I have, anybody know? Is there a diary on rebuilding the valve body , if so where do I find it? I did some research and I think that might help me out, but I'm not sure. Thanks for all the help guys.

The transmission section has a sticky from Glacier991 on rebuilding the 5R55E valve body.

I had the same noise problem and thought it was the transfer case. The noise sounded like a chain dragging. I bought a new transfer case from monster transmissions and installed it about 2 1/2 months ago. I just noticed the other day that the noise is back. I guess it was $750 waisted. I am now at a loss. I changed both front wheel bearings and the whole assembly there. At this point a stick of dynamite is starting to look pretty good.
I will be real interested as to how you make out with the tranny fix.
