Due to tranny whoes - I put a used A4LD in my 94 exploder, which is working for me right now. But a friend says they are junk, and I should upgrade to a c5. But the C5 doesn't have overdrive. With 4:56 gears and 33 bfg mud terrains, at 65 I am running about twentythree hundred RPM....

Is there a better tranny out there that will bolt to my 4.O- And give me the same OD gear ratio? I have done a couple searchs, but didn't get a good answer yet. This rig is an off raod trail rig, but I drive it to the trails - several hours in most cases.

As far as I know, the only options available when keeping the OD are the m50d (manual) or 700r4.. Actually there is a kit available to make the back of the 4.0 look like a 5.0 (ford small block) and then you could install an AOD but I don't know how well they hold up (I belive there is a thread about the adapter kit on the site.. I just don't remember where.. it was a sticky).

I have the 700r4 with adapter kit from Advanced adapters.. and love it.. I only wish I had a lower stall converter.. When I finally rebuild this one (it has 75k+ miles on it) or have the motor or trans out for something i'll have Hughes build me a 1200 stall converter (which will stall around 2000 rpms or so in an explorer).. For comparison, a 1600 stall converter is stalling at 2700 rpms in the explorer.

Does the 700r4 require heavy modification, or an adapter... I'll do a search, but thought I wouold ask.

Yes on the adapter (advanced adapters).. The adapter set costs around $800 or so and then you need a 700r4 built (you need the output shaft from the AA kit so you can use your stock transfer case).. Keep in mind, the 700r4 is a 60 degree transmision from a 2.8l v6, NOT the 700r4 for a 90 degree motor (4.3l, 350 etc).

There are a few other little things you need too.. Some wire, connectors, a shifter not to mention a TV cable from bowtie overdrives.

All said and done, my 700r4 conversion cost about the same as rebuilding the a4ld, but I love my 700r4 (I'd guess I have about $2300 or so into it)

Jefe also did a 700r4 conversion and has a good thread about it. You will also see posts from me all over the place talking about it.

I'll have to do some research and see if the seven hundred r, or the AOD, kits would work best. Another read every thing you can before you start project. :-P

Thanks again for the helpful info and quick response....

the auto to manual swap is much cheaper.. Find a donor vehicle.. Grab the transmission, shifter stuff, pedal stuff and possibly a computer (not needed, but the advance curve is supposed to be different on the manual engines). When you grab the stuff your grabbing everything you need, including clutch master cylinder etc.
