This may sound stupid, but im just trying to understand a few things alittle better! ;)

About a year ago, i had tranny problems in my 95 XLT, i believe it was the planetary gear?

Anyway, ive read lots of threads about how the Explorer trannys are very weak! So here is my question... what if any, are the main problems with the trannys? I know there are many gears and parts that make up a tranny, so is it the whole tranny that is weak? Or is it just a certain gear, or somthing?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, im just trying to learn.

Thanks

Don

Btw i have a list of all the parts and repairs to my tranny, if that may help me understand some things.

I'd like to say that not all explorer trannys are weak, mine is 212k old and it's just now showing its age. I believe one problem that is seen with those trannys is that the overdrive may tend to quit on people. that's because it's a pretty massive gear (by that I mean that the gear ratio is pretty large) and some people use it all the time and put a lot of pressure on the gear. Other than that I haven't heard of that many real problems with the transmissions, it's just that some people may not be as fortunate as others. Not all trannys are supposed to last 200k+, I just got lucky. I just sounds like you had some bad luck with yours. It's not often that I've heard of planetary gears screwing up like that. weird.

I see, i didnt mean to say all Explorers have tranny problems... it just seems like quite a few have problems!!
