I was on my computer searching for 7 hours. So I bought my '92 Explorer 4x4 with a blown tranny but the engine ran like a champ. I went and got a tranny from the wrecker and it looked like a rebuilt but after i put it on I realized that it had welded forward gears so I went and swapped for one that came of a rollover. I put it in but I didn't allign the TC so it would barely crank. I took it out with the TC and I alligned it properlly(TC was spinning freely by hand). I put the tranny up and engine once again will barelly turn(won't turn by hand). When I got it I changed the negative cable also. When I put the charger on the battery it charges just fine but once i put the positive and negative coming from the truck on, the charge drops to nothing but it still reads 11-12V. Please let me know if any of you guys encountered something similar. Thanks in advance.

Welded forward gears -- thats interesting. Got pics?

As for the torque converter problem, I'm not exactly sure what to say other than the torque converter must be seated all the way into the bellhousing. You should feel more than one small "thud" as its engaging the input shaft of the transmission and the pump. And yes you should be able to spin the torque converter freely with your hand because the central "torque convert" lock clutch is disengaged by default. I'm not sure what you mean by "won't turn by hand" -- the engine should be difficult to turn by hand (with a socket on the main pulley).

If your battery has been sitting and not fully charged (while you were working on the trans) then the plates may be sulfated and you will have to replace the battery. I had this happen last year when my Explorer sat for a couple of months. The battery will appear to take a charge, but once you remove it from the charger, the voltage will drop down below 12V.

You could take it to a parts store with a battery load test machine to verify this if you aren't sure.

Every gear was forward, including Park. The TC was all the way in but I'll pull the tranny really quick to check again. If I put a socket on the crank it won't budge whatsoever. Thanks for the help.

The battery takes about 15 hours to charge after 3 seconds of cranking the motor. I'll have tested today. Thanks for the advice
