I have a 2005 Ford Explorer XLT. When I put the vehicle into reverse, it sometimes hesitates and then slams into gear. The same thing happens from reverse to drive. It happens consistently with the park to reverse, but reverse to drive happens about 30% of the time. When I'm driving, all other shifting is smooth and you rarely feel the transmission do anything. Some people have suggested that the solenoid needs to be replaced and I was wondering if that sound like a good place to start. Any ideas. Just like to rule things out before I have to buy a whole new transmission.

Solenoid pack issue, ford had a tsb for it.

Solenoids, or low fluid level.

Possibly driveshaft universal joints? My Ex seemed to slam into park from reverse until I replaced the U-joints. I think it was the extra slack in the interface. Now it's tight as can be and no more slamming. Not saying this is your problem but it might be worth it to look in to.

What is a TSB ? I have this problem and was told to wait till the tranny dies to replace with a new one.

Technical service bulletin...what ford sends to dealers to show them how to fix a common issue..
Replace solenoid block or just wait for it to die...
Imho id replace the block its way cheaper than a new trans.. trust me mine was $3350 last week...
