Was going to buy a transmission temp gauge but was just fiddling with my autotap OBD-II scanner and it allows me to read the transmission fluid temp....
Does anyone know where the stock sensor is and how accurate it is?

Why buy a sensor if there already is one there.....

My book on the 99 5R55 simply draws a line to the general are of the pan for the sender, so I'm guessing it's somewhere inside the pan. HTH

Hey wpurple. Did you ever find out where the stock temp sensor is?

Had to bump this to the top.

I just bought a Autometer transmission temp. gauge and I was wondering do the 2000 X's with 4R70W's have a sensor already in the pan? If not, any problems to be aware of before I tap the pan?

The risk of placing the "tap fitting" facing directly down from the pan is that if you run over something tall enough, it will shear off the fitting.

Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor:

The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is located on the transmission main control body wiring harness assembly. It is a temperature-sensitive device called a thermistor. The resistance value of the TFT will vary with temperature change. The processor monitors the voltage across the TFT to determine the temperature of the transmission fluid.

The processor assembly uses this initial signal to determine whether a cold start shift schedule is necessary. The cold start shift schedule allows quicker shifts when the transmission fluid temperature is cold. The processor also inhibits torque converter clutch operation at low transmission fluid temperatures and corrects EPC pressures for temperatures.

Symptoms:
Torque converter clutch engagement and stabilized shift schedules happen too soon after a cold start. Harsh or soft shifts.
Diagnostic Trouble Codes: P0712, P0713, P1711, P1783.
