I have a 2000 4wd 168/K miles with auto and 4.0 motor. Everything great stopped at gas station to refuel...Started up will not move in drive. But, I can start in first gear and manually shift to 2 - drive. Overdrive works sometimes. Fluid changed about one month ago, No codes. Any and all help appreciated. :exp:

#1 suspect is fluid level. Especially since you just had fluid changed.

#2 suspect is the electronic pressure control solenoid....these DO wear out and you are past your expected lifespan for one.

#3 is something to do with the valve body... bad torque, leaky gasket, stickt spool, etc.

the rest can be lumped into sensor inputs to computer (TP, RPM, VSS for example) but I'd expect these to throw a code. Lastly, there is a possibility of internal damage but I strongly doubt it.

Have the fluid level checked.IF it is ok.... then I'd advise you to read the 5R55E valve body rebuld diary in the sticky threads in this Transmission forum

btw. welcome to the site and this forum.

fluid level is OK...

Checked the rebuild diary, I may cheat an buy a rebuilt valve body...Done alot of work on cars but never any transmission work, replacement seems straight forward. How long from start to finish?

Transmission shop advised I need more than a VB (whole tranny) at a cost of $1,750, however, they just drove it around the block still not throwing codes.. Any thoughs anyone.

Thanks for the welcome

I'd expect nothing less from a transmission shop.

Vlave Body Replacement

My automatic transmission became a manual transmission while I was away (1,400 miles from home) so I had to shift from 1st – drive to get back. Before I replace the valve body did that 1,400 mile drive do my transmission in.

While I have the transmission opened up is there anything else that I should replace.

FORD really makes a good vehicles despite the transmission going out, FORDS always get me home.
