Hello. I have a 98 ranger 4x4 auto w/4.0 I have lost my reverse gear with a plang!!!! sound when it happened. Can anyone help me who has an intimate knowledge of the insides of my transmission. my queastions for now are

What are the options as far as what all can fail to disable reverse?

Can it be repaired without removing the Tranny?

I am hoping for a failed linkage or valvebody. All the other gears work fine as well as 4x4. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have engine braking in manual 1st ???

If you actually heard a noise when reverse failed, probably broke the low/reverse band. I bet you will have no engine braking in man 1 st.

Trans would have to be removed and completely torn down to replace it.

I agree. The low/reverse band is a pretty stout cast iron band.... and if it broke you might well hear the event when it happened. I will also add that low/reverse band breakage is somewhat rare, especially as compared to the intermediate and OD bands which are a steel band, not cast iron.

Wow!!! Thanks Guys!!!!! I really didnt want to hear that.......... but... It is so very much appreciated. If any one else can find ignorance in what the last two gentlemen have said....... PLEASE!!!!!!! MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

Thanks for your input you two!!!! I fear you are right.... I needed a cheaper solution but...... You just cant put a value on true tribal knowledge.

Thanks a bunch!!!

As stated previously, the rear band is for manual 1st, and reverse. Another possibility is the shift fork in the transfer case. I remember reading a few other threads about those breaking, and losing reverse. I don't know if that applies to your transfer case.

You don't want a cheaper solution, you want the correct solution. Drop the pan and look inside.

Thanks for all the input. I have no engine braking in first manual
