I have a 2004 Sport Trac 4.0 with a hundred and ninety thousand miles just replace timing chain and cassetteafter driving for a few weeks my transmission is not wanting to downshift when I come to a complete stop it will keep trying to pull until the engine stalls or I put it in neutral it shifts up great doesn't slip has had a slight shutter I plan on changing the filter and the fluid this weekend to see if that helps does anyone else have any ideas what this could be.

Do you have the ability to check for stored CMDTC's?

There may be a clue there.

Ok I changed the tranny fluid and filter and added a can of BG products and still no change what would be the next step the TCC or the torque converter

Is it reving high and that's why it's trying to shift into gear? Have you checked the throttle position sensor?

No it's not reving high. Only when I have gotten up to speed 55 or 60 mph and come to a stop it does not want to shift to the lower 2 gears feels like when you try to stop a standard without depressing the clutch. Now I can manually down shift to 2nd and back to drive and it will down shuft fine. Could it be the torque converter control cylinoid

It could be a solenoid. Do you have a code reader? The CEL or OD light won't always flash with a problem but there are a lot of "gray" codes that can be stored without triggering those lights.

When my TC solenoid went bad, the TC wouldn't lock up at all on the highway but it's possible to have the opposite problem where it won't lock. When you changed the fluid, did you flush the system, or just drop the pan?

Hard to say what could cause it without a code. How dirty was the ATF? Did you clean off the shavings from the magnet and were there a lot of shavings in the oil itself?

I am gonna check the codes today. The fluid definitely needed changed. As far as shavings on the mag. There wasn't any it was sludge. And I did clean it off. I will post back with codes. Thanks.

It's over my head then.

Which one did you get? The action plus or a simpler one? It should have worked, yes. Another thing you can do is that auto stores generally have a scanner to read codes as well.

I don't know what one it is . It said no codes. But for the past 2days it has been down shifting perfact.I'm glad but wish I knew what it was lol
