5rr55e. Have to manually shift from 1st to 2nd but going to drive rpms go up, have to push OD off, then it goes on to 3rd and 4th but then rpms go up then push OD again and it seems to settle out. Is this a specific OD problem that I could possibly fix even cheap. Any help out there?

manual 1/2 but no drive= VB work to me. not hard imo, many companies like sonnax transgo superior make kits for these

1/2M uses different servo iirc. the sporadic OD sounds like soemthing involved in the OD shift (servo or soemthing) is going out, as 2nd is a combo of 1st and od, so that could explain maybe it shifting to 3rd? not sure, does anyone know if OD is off it will skip 2nd?

TLDR: VB issue, should be fixable. shift kits/fixes available

Sounds like a broken Intermediate band

but it manually goes into 2 though, and also goes into OD at times. is there something im missing/knowledge i dont have? want to learn from the greats!
I've just seen this on the forums a bunch of times over the years

These symptoms always end up being a broken band
a flair shift would be more of a valve body or solenoid Issue
Or A mard up server bore

So new or used tranny for newby diagnosing this matter huh?
I suggest a full rebuild and a bigger trans cooler
Really comes down to what you can afford

imo used is a hit/miss especially with the 5r55e, unless its an extremely low mile unit that you know how its been driven/cared for

and rebuilds depend very largely on the rebuilder.

so if you have a good rebuilder (talk to local speed guys, etc) then i say rebuild

but if theres no good option, then reman, as a reman is better than a bad rebuilder, as both used/bad rebuilder can be bad luck

good rebuild > reman > used/bad rebuild

imo, the best rebuild is one you did yourself ;)

whichever way you go, lots of things that imo could/should be done w the 5r, like donald mentioned big trans cooler, some shift kit upgrades, that kind of stuff. also with the fresh trans imo throw some lubegard red in

Band adjustment or servo failure/failing

I just have to say thank you to all for the help. I found and changed tranny with used one. $500.00 . Just had to use my old extension with balance and mount. Cost $80. For 10 quarts fluid and also changed filter and gasket. Took me 2 days completely on my own. Tranny feels strong..
